"Parents Worry Over Links of MMR Drug Firms to
Safety Experts" London Telegraph (www.telegraph.co.uk)
(08/25/02) P. 4; Fraser, Lorraine
Fifteen of the 36 Committee on Safety of
Medicines members for the British
government are linked to manufacturers of the measles, mump, and rubella (MMR)
vaccine. The safety issues surrounding the vaccine have caused concern among
parents about possible conflicts of interest. No evidence exists to suggests
that MMR recommendations have been influenced by the committee members'
association with the pharmaceutical companies, however. A code of practice at
the Department of Health prohibits committee members
from making decisions on products in which they have an interest.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to William C. Jarvis, September 28, 1820
"What's the point of vaccination if it doesn't protect you from the unvaccinated?"
