Birth weight of offspring is inversely related to mothers' insulin resistance in older age, even though glucose intolerance during pregnancy is associated with heavier offspring at birth. These results, from a cross sectional study by Lawlor and colleagues (p 359), support the hypothesis that genetic factors determining insulin resistance explain at least part of the association between birth weight and cardiovascular disease and diabetes in adulthood.
