"Indian State Battles Encephalitis"
Associated Press ( www.ap.org ) (08/02/02)
A Japanese encephalitis outbreak in the northeastern Indian state
of Assam has killed 80 people in the last month, with another 140
people being treated for the disease, according to Nandita
Choudhury, college principal at Assam Medical College. On
Friday, the Assam government sought federal help in bringing
encephalitis vaccine to the region. At about $60 a dose, the
vaccine is too expensive for Assam to buy on its own, said
Kalyani Das, Assam's health director.
