U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Immunization Drive Begins [in D.C]"
Washington Post ( www.washingtonpost.com ) (08/02/02) P. B5; Mui,
Ylan Q.
As the second phase of a immunization crackdown on school age
vaccinations begins, as many as 8,000 District of Columbia
children are anticipated to flood the city's free clinics before
school starts this year. The total includes about 6,100
returning students who require booster shots and about 2,000 new
students. Last November, the first phase of the immunization
program brought an end to the District school system's
non-enforcement of pre-enrollment vaccinations mandates. At the
time, officials estimated that 29,000 of the 68,000 school
students were not in compliance with childhood immunization
standards and gave them until January to fulfill them. By the
end of the January deadline, nearly 13,000 students were blocked
from attending school until they could show proof of compliance.
Public schools and the city's Department of Health have arranged
free vaccination clinics all over the District, and D.C. General
Hospital and Trinity College in Northwest plan to hold health
fairs during the middle and later half of August for phase two of
the immunization program.
