"Health Cutbacks to Curtail Immunizations for Children [in Los Angeles County]" Los Angeles Times (www.latimes.com) (08/22/02) P. B1; Ornstein, Charles; Briscoe, Daren

Los Angeles County is cutting health care costs, which includes reductions in immunizations for children and treatment for communicable diseases, among other things, and while there has been little vocal opposition, some health care advocates fear damaging effects.  The Board of Supervisors this week approved a health care plan to cut as many as 84,000 of 97,000 annual childhood immunization visits; the cuts are being made because the Department of Health Services is expected to see an $800 million deficit within three years.  The public health cuts will take the form of reduced clinic hours or fewer available appointments.  Some of the children immunized at public health clinics have private medical insurance but do not want to wait for an appointment with a doctor, notes Dr. Jonathan Fielding, the county's director of public health.  Critics contend that the cuts, particularly the immunization ones, are dangerous, and they point out that the children need the immunizations to get into school.  Fielding noted that many children will be able to get immunized at free clinics or through nonprofit groups, but that the county intends to keep an eye on immunization statistics to make sure the cuts do not affect progress.
