"Government Gives More Cash to Fund MMR Research"
Press Association (UK) (www.pressassociation.press.net )
(08/20/02); von Radowitz, John
The British Department of Health (DoH) will help fund ongoing
research by the National Institute of Biological Standards and
Control (NIBSC) into the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
vaccine. Researchers at the NIBSC have been studying Dr. Andrew
Wakefield's claims of a link between the MMR vaccine and Crohn's
disease and autism, and part of the new research will attempt to
reproduce his findings. A DoH statement noted that the NIBSC has
been trying unsuccessfully for years to duplicate findings
linking the measles virus, bowel disorders, and autism; but the
new project will involve a range of experts, including Dr.
Wakefield's collaborators from the Royal Free Hospital. The DoH
noted, "Our position remains that based on the best available
scientific evidence, MMR is the most effective way to protect
children against measles, mumps, and rubella."
