"Can Mumps Vaccine Induce Remission in Recurrent Respiratory Papilloma?" Archives of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery Online
(archotol.ama-assn.org/) (07/01/02) Vol. 128, No. 7,; Pashley, Nigel R.T.
Eleven children with recurrent respiratory papilloma (RRP) were selected for a trial examining the use of laser excision and locally injected mumps vaccine to cause remission of the disease. The early trial employed laser excision alone for one year, while a later study with 18 children and 20 adults employed the laser excision with adjuvant therapy. All of the patients went through laser excision of papilloma followed by locally injected mumps vaccine, with remission only declared after two consecutive disease-free intervals and a follow-up of at least one year, determined by microphotographs of the larynx and trachea. The study of 11 children resulted in remission in nine patients, or 82 percent, by 1 to 10 injections, with follow-up of five years to 19 years. The study of 38 patients showed remission in 29 of them, or 76 percent, between four injections and 26 injections, with follow-up of two years to five years. The studies indicate that injection with mumps vaccine following laser excision is a positive factor in the remission of RRP in children.
