There have been 35 cases of acute flaccid
paralysis reported in India's Ambedkar Nagar district so far this year,
including 19 confirmed cases of polio. Of those 19 cases, 17 cases were of P1
wild virus, while the other two were P3 wild virus. Clinical test results on
the other 16 cases have not yet come in. According to health department sources,
vaccine administration has been hampered by the belief of some rural people that
the polio vaccine renders a person impotent. To contain the spread of the
disease, health officials have enlisted the help of local clergy and citizens to
ensure the anti-polio program's success.
