SECRETIN CAUSES VIOLENCE IN 20% OF KIDS
The following
information has just been made available to me with respect to the Secretin
clinical trials performed at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children this past
winter.
Please note
this information has not been officially published.
THE TRIALS:
The trial
consisted of 65 ASD/PDD kids, randomly chosen. It was a double blind test
with Secretin given to 1/2 the kids and a placebo given to the other
half. Neither the parents not the assessors knew who got the Secretin;
only the doctor running the trials was privy.
The parents were
informed of the following possible side effects: Increased hyperactivity
(short period of time), increased aggression ("very few" was the
exact quote) and no sign of personality change.
Medical personnel
familiar with autism administered the I.V. under the strictest of conditions,
and the children and families stayed at the hospital for more than four hours
after the I.V. injection. These children got two infusions total,
approximately 6 weeks apart.
The kids who
received the placebo during the study were offered the Secretin (under
similarly strict conditions, in hospital) after the trial was completed.
OUR STORY:
My son was in
those trials. He was given the placebo, and when "Sick Kids" offered
us the real stuff, I made sure I did my homework. I scoured new studies
and articles, including the one quoted below, and found nothing alarming.
My husband and I decided to go ahead. My son received his first infusion
April 26, and was to receive his second (final) on June 14.
About 3 1/2 weeks
ago, my sweet, compliant little boy became aggressive to the point of violence,
began having uncontrollable tantrums, mood swings, self injurious behaviors,
lashing out at his sister and destructive to his belongings and our home.
All behaviors were unprovoked. There were no clear reasons for these
rages.
MY BEAUTIFUL BOY HAD A COMPLETE CHANGE IN PERSONALITY!!!
In short, my son disappeared, and a stranger came to live with us...
I
made calls to his psychologist, neurologist, behaviorist and developmental
pediatrician.
His developmental pediatrician told me that she would contact the doctor who
ran the trials at Sick Kids and would ask for her opinion. She called me
back within the hour with the words "Do NOT give your child any more
Secretin!" She went on to say that a whopping 20% of kids had
this reaction to the Secretin.
The following
quote comes from a report entitled "Secretin Update,
December 1999: The Safety Issue" written by Bernard Rimland, Ph.D. of
the Autism Research Institute
>>
During the past two years, according to our best estimates, about 10,000 doses
of Secretin have been administered to several thousand autistic children, by
several hundred physicians, with few noteworthy side effects. Until
recently, the side effects reported have been primarily increased hyperactivity
(16%), stimming (5%), and aggressiveness (4%). These problems have usually
subsided in less than one week (77%) or less than two weeks (90%). (Percentages
are based on 1,089 responses.)<<
I
am writing this provide information to those of you who are involved with or
considering involvement with Secretin. 20% is quite a big number, that is ONE
in FIVE kids!
I
want to be clear in stating there is no cover-up going on here. I asked
our developmental pediatrician for permission to spread this information via
the internet and was told to go ahead, provided I state that it has not yet
officially been published.
My son is fine now. Last Friday, he turned back into his wonderful self,
and the rages and mood swings were gone as quickly as they came. He is
slowly beginning to respond to his therapists again, and life is returning to
normal in our house.
It's what we don't know that is the most frightening aspect of this. Can
this violence occur at any time after the administration of Secretin? In
other words, can a child have 14 vials/transdermals of Secretin and have a
personality change on the 15th? There are no trials done on those kids,
so how would we know? My 4-1/2 year old boy was able to break a solid wooden
dining room chair during one of these rages. What sort of damage could a
16-year old do? My son also tried to put his face through the
window. What would have happened if I hadn't been standing behind him,
holding him?
All told, these rages lasted about three weeks. you might say to yourself
"Big deal, we can get through three weeks". But I want to tell
you that this short period of time had a devastating impact on my family.
Please keep our story in mind in your final analysis of this intervention.
Good luck to all of us!
