First Thimerosal Suit Filed. Austin, Texas March 28, 2001
Austin, Texas has become the site of the first known
civil suit to allege that the mercury based preservative "thimerosal"
causes mercury poisoning and neurological symptoms similar to autism.
The case known as "Joseph Counter, et al v.
Abbott Laboratories, Inc., et al" (Case No. GN100866 ) is now pending in
the 200th District Court of Travis County, Texas. This groundbreaking suit
alleges that cumulative exposures to the mercury-based compound, which is used
as a preservative in many pediatric vaccines, contributes to cause a body
burden of mercury that, in certain susceptible individuals, leads to the
development of significant neurological
disabilities, developmental problems, and other
symptoms.
The case has been filed by Waters & Kraus, a
