U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"North Dakota Pharmacists Becoming Shot-Givers"
Associated Press (www.ap.org)
(03/30/02)
A law passed last year in North Dakota permits
pharmacists to vaccinate patients under specific circumstances, and many people
believe the provision helps ensure immunization for those who might not
otherwise get shots they need. The law outlines education guidelines and
stipulates a doctor participate in the program. One pharmacist points out that
pharmacists are often more familiar with patients' allergies and conditions,
which is important when giving vaccinations. Some pharmacies give just flu and
pneumonia shots, while others offer vaccinations for pneumonia, hepatitis A,
hepatitis B, and meningitis.
