"HIV Vaccine Study Nixed"

Journal of the American Medical Association Online (www.jama.com)

(03/20/02) Vol. 287, No. 11,; Vastag, Brian

Phase III studies of two AIDS vaccines, Aventis' ALVAC-HIV and VaxGen's AIDSVAX B/B, will not occur due to poor results from phase II studies, according to the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN).  HVTN principal investigator Laurence Corey explains that both vaccines failed to produce significant T-cell responses in the second phase of clinical trials, but the vaccines will likely continue through testing in combination with other candidates and in different doses.  Phase II clinical trials of ALVAC proved that canarypox-based vaccines, which many are currently in development, are safe to use in humans.
