Heinz baby food maker in trouble again

In October, a carcinogenic chemical was found in baby food jar lids and the baby food itself. This month, a real tragedy occurred for families who fed their babies a kosher soy-based formula that lacked an essential vitamin. Two infant deaths were attributed to Super Soya formula in Israel. This kosher formula was manufactured in Germany by Humana for its Israeli counterpart company Remedia. The food giant HJ Heinz, based in Pittsburgh, owns 51 percent of Remedia.

The soy formula contained only about one tenth of the advertised amount of vitamin B1, which is essential to the development of the nervous system in infants. According to the Israeli Health Ministry more than 20 infants suffered from a disorder caused by a deficiency in the vitamin after drinking the formula. Symptoms of brain damage in the affected babies included vomiting, diarrhea and restlessness.

The formula was immediately recalled from store shelves, and parents who fed their infants this formula brought their babies to medical facilities for evaluation and choked hotlines with thousands of calls. The formula was also exported to the United States and used primarily by orthodox Jews. A spokesman for German prosecutors said they were investigating Humana on preliminary suspicions of causing death by negligence and breaching food safety standards.

We can learn several things from this story. The obvious conclusion is to breastfeed babies for as long as possible and avoid giving formula. The second is to never give infants a homemade formula if they are relying on the formula as their primary source of nutrition. This tragedy, and others like it, reveal that one missing nutrient can have disastrous effects.
