ABSTRACT
- Medical malpractice insurance rates for
obstetricians are soaring in Washington
State and around nation, leading many
doctors to stop delivering babies; pregnant
women in rural areas, where there are
already few obstetricians, must scramble to
find doctor; even opponents of federal cap
on jury awards against doctors admit
shortage is serious; graph of malpractice
premiums; photo (M) Shannon Minor went to
the drugstore last year to buy a home
pregnancy test, picked up the local
newspaper and read some bad news: her
obstetrician, Barbara Pringle, was planning
to stop delivering babies.
But not only was Dr. Pringle giving up
obstetrics, so were four other doctors in
Mount Vernon, including Dr. Pringle's
husband, Robert, and the Pringles' longtime
partner. Within a year only four
obstetricians would be practicing in Mount
Vernon, a small city in an agricultural
valley of the Cascade Mountains, halfway
between Seattle and the Canadian border.

the archive at your convenience over the
lifetime of the multi-pack.
Once you purchase an
article, you may view it as often as you
like over the next 90 days. Archive articles
do not include photos, charts or graphics
