Study Recommends 2nd Test Before a Prostate Biopsy

ABSTRACT - New study recomments doctors repeat blood test for prostate cancer in four to six weeks before performing biopsy on man with slightly elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen because PSA levels fluctuate naturally over time; finds over 20 percent of men studied had elevated PSA levels; level fell back to normal for half of them in subsequent tests (M) A man's score on a routine blood test for prostate cancer fluctuates naturally over time, so doctors should repeat the test in four to six weeks before performing a biopsy, a new study recommends.

In the study of 1,000 men, being published today in The Journal of the American Medical Association, more than 20 percent were found to have elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen, or P.S.A. For half the men, the level fell back to normal in subsequent tests.
