York, Pennsylvania and Florida (M) Arguing
that legal costs and big jury awards are
overwhelming them, insurance companies and
other businesses have stepped up efforts in
the states to restrict medical malpractice
lawsuits and other kinds of personal injury
suits.
Bills are now pending in more than 20
states, and lawmakers have approved measures
in at least 11 more states this year, as
tracked by proponents of the lawsuit
restrictions. The bills aim to limit awards
for pain and suffering, reduce the amount of
money that defendants must pay to appeal a
decision and apportion liability for damages
based on a defendant's share of any blame.
