The World Health
Organization (WHO) says extra resources are needed to combat the spread of
measles in developing nations. A new WHO report claims that more than 770,000
children succumbed to measles in 2000, and that many of those deaths could have
been prevented had more international investment been available to health
infrastructures and vaccination programs in poor nations. The WHO and UNICEF
are calling for another $200 million to help carry out comprehensive measles
vaccination campaigns in the 45 countries hardest hit by measles over the next
three years. The WHO's report is published in the May 23 issue of Morbidity and
Mortality Weekly Report.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to William C. Jarvis, September 28, 1820
"What's the point of vaccination if it doesn't protect you from the unvaccinated?"
