“The WHO Wants Company Money to Battle SARS”

Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com) (05/22/03) P. D3; Fuhrmans, Vanessa; Naik, Gautam

The World Health Organization (WHO) is launching a campaign to raise $100 million through corporate donations to help combat the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).  The WHO would like to raise the money by September, which is the start of flu season in many areas, and it is seeking an additional $100 million from its usual contributors, primarily governments.  Those funds will go towards helping developing countries build better disease surveillance and response systems.  The corporate money will be put into a fund run by executives chosen by the WHO, and will help China train medical workers, provide better medical equipment, trace the spread of SARS, and to monitor and contain new outbreaks.
