WHO Says World
Not Ready for New SARS-Like Diseases
World Health
Organization (WHO) head of communicable diseases David Heymann predicted Monday
an increase in outbreaks similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome that could
potentially kill millions. Guenael Rodier, director of communicable disease and
response at the WHO, also asserted that better global surveillance and disease
response is required. Heymann suggested increased funding for laboratories and
epidemiological research to prepare for future outbreaks.
