“U.S. Flu Season Could Bring SARS, Health Secretary Says”
Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com) (05/20/03)
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson warns that the next flu season in the United States and Europe will probably see the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) reappear and cause some deaths. Sixty-five cases have been reported in the United States and there have been about 36 in Europe, with no fatalities. World Health Organization spokeswoman Maria Cheng noted Tuesday that “we have only seen SARS for a couple of months, and it is too early to know if it will establish a seasonal pattern.” Thompson said he has allocated over $20 million for a SARS early warning system.
