“Shingles on the Rise, Experts Warn”

Edmonton Journal (www.edmontonjournal.com) (05/16/03) P. A13

Experts report that shingles, a condition cause by the varicella zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox, appears to be increasing in Canada. The rise could be due to a number of factors, such as soaring stress levels and an aging population.  Approximately five out of every 100,000 adults in Canada develop shingles every year, statistics show.  Researchers are expected to launch in Canada this year a clinical study of an experimental shingles vaccine, a more potent version of the varicella vaccine that is already being tested on nearly 40,000 people in the United States.
