U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Smallpox Vaccinations Fall Far Short of Target"
Charleston Post and Courier (SC) (www.charleston.net)
(05/14/03) P. 1A; Maze, Jonathan
The smallpox vaccination program in South
Carolina has fallen far short of its goal. The state ordered 7,800 doses of the
vaccine in December; however, since that time only 833 health care workers in
South Carolina have received the shots, according to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nationwide the immunization program is
also running into difficulties, as only about 35,000 health care workers out of
President Bush's goal of 500,000 have been vaccinated. The CDC is revising that
plan and says now that a more realistic objective is 50,000 people.
