"India Pushes Polio Eradication Goal to 2005"

Indian Health Minister Sushma Swaraj said Thursday that the country has revised its polio eradication plan, now working to eliminate the disease by 2005. Previously, India wanted to eliminate the disease by 2002, but last year over 1,400 new cases were reported in the country, mostly in Uttar Pradesh. Hurdles facing India as it moves forward with its polio elimination efforts involve overcrowding, illiteracy, poor sanitation and hygiene, and increasing birth rates.
