Secretary Thompson to Release $100 Million to Assist States With Smallpox

U.S. Newswire
05/10/03

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to release $100 million to help states better prepare for a potential attack using smallpox, HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced. The funds, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, come in addition to $1.1 billion distributed last year and $1.4 billion in fiscal year 2003 monies. "This additional money is part of our overall commitment to our state and local partners to build a stronger public health system to care for Americans in the event of any emergency, including a smallpox attack," Thompson explained.
