World Health Organization officials say that the
global campaign to eradicate polio is being changed to concentrate on 13 nations
where polio is still circulating or was circulating recently--an alteration that
means the reduction of activity in 80 other nations, due to limited funds.
Officials note that the campaign to eliminate the disease is short about $275
million. In 2001, there were 329 polio cases around the world, but last year
there were 1,919, with India accounting for 1,556 cases and both Pakistan and
Nigeria seeing increases as well. The campaign is five years behind schedule,
with a new eradication deadline of 2005.
