A BEFRIENDING service is being launched
in Edinburgh on Thursday as part of Autism Awareness Week.
Volunteers who sign up for the project will be asked to spend
a few hours each week with a person with an autism spectrum
disorder (ASD), or their family, in a bid to help prevent
feelings of isolation which can affect sufferers and those
close to them.
Volunteers co-ordinator Jenny McDonald said: "Having a
befriender who understands the needs of an adult or child with
autism can make a huge difference.
"This can allow a parent to spend time with their other
children or have a few hours to themselves. It can also be a
rewarding experience for the befriender, knowing their support
is highly valued. We are delighted to offer this service in
Edinburgh."
