“FDA, FTC Warn 40+ Web Sites About Bogus SARS Products”
Dow Jones Newswire (www.djnewswires.com) (05/09/03); Middleton, Otesa
The U.S. government sent warnings to over 40 Internet sites that claimed to have treatments and cures for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Mark B. McClellan noted that although products to fight SARS are in the pipeline, there is currently no product that has been approved to prevent or cure SARS. On Friday, the FDA sent warning letters to eight Web sites that made false SARS claims, and the Federal Trade Commission warned another 48. Consumer authorities in Canada say they have also warned sites that purport to have a vaccine against SARS.
