“Search on for a SARS Vaccine”
Contra Costa Times (www.contracosta.com) (05/09/03) P. F4; Silber, Judy
Since severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was only recently discovered and no previous research on the illness exists, pharmaceutical companies are moving quickly toward developing a vaccine and obtaining intellectual property related to the illness along the way. Chiron Vice President Rino Rappuoli believes the company will know whether it has a plausible SARS vaccine within 12 months, and researchers at the University of California at Irvine, VaxGen, and other companies are also working on potential SARS vaccines. Companies are still awaiting information about how long SARS will be around to ensure that a move towards a vaccine is profitable.
