India's Bharat Biotech has launched its new
typhoid vaccine Typbar. The vaccine will cost patients 175 rupees, about 25
rupees less than it costs to purchase vaccine imported from other countries,
according to Bharat chairman Krishna Ella, and the company plans to reduce the
price by 100 rupees in the near future. Producing the typhoid vaccine cost 170
million over two years, and Ella noted that the U.S. National Institutes of
Health provided assistance. Each year, said Ella, approximately 16 million
people worldwide contract typhoid, including about 6 million in India, and about
600,000 people die from the disease.
