"Osaka Univ. Researchers Develop Malaria Vaccine"

Daily Yomiuri (www.yomiuri.co.jp/index-e.htm) (05/07/03) P. 3

A team of researchers at Japan's Osaka University have developed a vaccine against malaria, made up of a protein produced by the plasmodium parasite that causes malaria.  The vaccine is due to start clinical trials next spring, and it is intended to immunize against falciparum malaria, the most dangerous strain of the disease.  The Osaka team worked on the serine repeat antigen protein, and the vaccine is based on protein that has been artificially produced.  Team leader Prof. Toshihiro Horii suggested that the vaccine could be available for general use within five or six years.
