"Nearly 500 dead in Niger Meningitis Epidemic"

Health officials report that an epidemic of cerebro-spinal meningitis in Niger has affected 6,550 people and caused at least 498 deaths since the beginning of the year. At least 150 of those deaths have been reported in Zinder, which is located near the border with Nigeria. Niger's development partners--including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and France--have supplied vaccines and medicine in an effort to stem the spread of the disease.
