"World's Labs United Against Viral Enemy; Scientists Scramble for SARS Treatment"
Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (05/05/03) P. A16; Stein, Rob
Researchers at the world's top laboratories are feverishly working to find an antidote to the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. As new cases are diagnosed, scientists and technicians around the globe are running different experiments to determine the best treatment for SARS. The experiments are part of a multi-national effort orchestrated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to mobilize more than a dozen laboratories worldwide to study the virus and hopefully put scientists on the path to an effective treatment. Mark Salter, chief of the WHO's mobilization campaign, says scientists are "at a crossroads" and cannot afford to guess what will happen with this disease. "The work over the next few weeks is vital in establishing our understanding of how this disease may take root, or not," he said.
