Researchers at the world's top laboratories are
feverishly working to find an antidote to the virus that causes severe acute
respiratory syndrome, or SARS. As new cases are diagnosed, scientists and
technicians around the globe are running different experiments to determine the
best treatment for SARS. The experiments are part of a multi-national effort
orchestrated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to mobilize more than a
dozen laboratories worldwide to study the virus and hopefully put scientists on
the path to an effective treatment. Mark Salter, chief of the WHO's
mobilization campaign, says scientists are "at a crossroads" and cannot afford
to guess what will happen with this disease. "The work over the next few weeks
is vital in establishing our understanding of how this disease may take root, or
not," he said.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
