The number of new meningitis cases in Burkina Faso--the site of an eight-month meningitis outbreak that has taken the lives of more than 1,000 people--has declined to 291 per week, down from 441 per week. The outbreak has infected 7,846 people since October, resulting in the deaths of 1,184 people. Health Minister Alain Yoda noted that 2 million doses of meningitis vaccine obtained through the World Health Organization helped to contain the epidemic.
