On 8March 2000 a caseof
laboratory-confirmed measles wasdetected in Haiti. Overthe ensuing months, anexplosive epidemic occurred
thatspread to 8 ofthe 9 departments ofHaiti, including the nation'scapital, Port au
Prince.After peaking in thelast half of
November2000, the epidemic begana rapid
decline. Thedate of onset forthe last
confirmed casewas 26 September 2001.During
the 18 monthsof the epidemic, 1149cases were
confirmed. Tocontrol the epidemic, various
strategies were employed, includingvaccination campaigns
that usedfixed posts and door-to-door
activities. Critical factors inthe success of thesecampaigns were thorough trainingand supervision of
fieldstaff; a high-quality door-to-door
vaccination strategy; multiple visitsto homes; and
monitoringof vaccine coverage byhousehold
during the courseof the campaigns.
