A prospective immunogenicitytrial of measles andrubella vaccines was conductedin Oman. Children
receivedmeasles vaccine at age9 months and
measles-rubellavaccine at age 15months.
Serum specimens weretested for measles-specific IgGand rubella-specific IgG. Of1025 eligible infants,
881(86.0%) returned for allfive visits and
hadadequate serum samples fortesting.
Seroconversion to measlesafter vaccination at 9months was 98.1%. At15 months, 47 (5.3%)of the 881 childrenwere seronegative for measles;of these, 44 (93.6%)seroconverted. At 16 months,99% of the childrenseronegative at age 9months seroconverted after receivingtwo doses of
measlesvaccine. At age 15months, 684 (77.6%)
childrenwere seronegative for rubella.Of
these, 676 (98.8%)seroconverted by age 16
months. One dose ofmeasles vaccine at age9
months was highlyimmunogenic. One dose of
measles-rubella vaccine at age15 months closed theremaining measles immunogenicity gapand resulted
in ahigh rate of rubellaseroconversion.
The study protocols forphase I and phaseII of this clinicaltrial were approved bythe
National Maternal ChildHealth Committee, Ministry of
Health, Oman; the InstitutionalReview Board, Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,Atlanta; and the SecretariatCommittee for Research InvolvingHuman Subjects, World HealthOrganization, Geneva. Witnessed oralparental consent was
obtainedfor each study subject;consent was obtained
