This studyassessed the effect ofurban
supplemental measles vaccinationcampaigns (19971999) in Mozambiquethat targeted children
aged959 months. Reported measlescases were analyzed tothe end of 2001
to determine campaign impact.Hospital inpatient data
werecollected in the nationalcapital and in
threeprovincial capitals where epidemics
occurred the year afterthe campaigns. Measles epidemicsfollowed campaigns in thecapital city, in 4of 9 provincial capitals, and in 39 of
126 districts. Reasons forlimited campaign impact
includeda low proportion ofurban dwellers,
the geographiclocation of some provincial
capitals, the limited targetage group, and lowroutine and campaign coverage.Routine immunization
and diseasesurveillance should be strengthenedand campaigns must achieve>90% coverage and targetwider age groups andgeographic areas in orderto reach a highproportion of persons susceptibleto measles.
