Duringthe 20002001 influenza
immunizationcampaign in Canada, anew adverse
event, oculo-respiratorysyndrome (ORS), was notedin association with administrationof vaccine
supplied byone manufacturer. The original
case definition for ORSspecified bilateral
conjunctivitis, facialedema, or respiratory symptomsbeginning 224 h afterinfluenza
vaccination and resolvingwithin 48 h after
onset. To characterize thespectrum, severity, and impactof ORS, we contactedpersons who had reportedany influenza vaccineassociated adverseevent in British Columbia,Canada, during the 20002001vaccination campaign. With use
of a standardized telephoneinterview, we collected
informationfrom 609 (79%) of769 eligible
persons. Thirteenpercent of ORS-affected personsreported onset 2 h
after vaccination, 27% experiencedsymptoms for >48 h,and 42% considered thesymptoms to be severe. The surveillance case definitionfor ORS for 20012002was revised to includeonset
24 h aftervaccination, with no
restrictionon duration. ORS shouldbe
incorporated into annualinfluenza vaccine safety
monitoring.
