India's
Chandigarh city administration and the Municipal Corp. will jointly provide
about 10,000 children with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine over the next
three weeks, hoping to stave off a possible outbreak of measles. The program
will cover 10 areas, including Mauli Jagran, Indira Colony, Bapu Dham, CITCO,
Mal-oya, Dadu Majra, Khuda Lahora, Sector 25, Ram Darbar and Kuldeep Colony in
Kajheri. Behind the campaign, says the Health Department, is the probability of
a significant risk of measles emerging again this year, assuming it follows its
cyclic pattern: the last outbreak was in Chandigarh between December 1998 and
February 1999. Approximately 25 percent of the children in the city have not
been vaccinated against measles, and officials also noted that an influx of
migrants will add to the number of people susceptible to the disease.
