"85 More Infected With Encephalitis, But China Says Outbreak Under Control"
Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (06/30/03)
The Chinese state media reported that the health ministry for the world's most populous nation says that an outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in Guangdong province is under control, despite reports of 85 new cases of the brain inflammation disease. As of Friday, the ministry listed figures of 296 total encephalitis B cases, 25 deaths, and 48 suspected cases. The nation has traditionally seen outbreaks of encephalitis each year beginning in June, though the disease's effects have been sharply curtailed since the introduction of a vaccine for encephalitis there in the mid-1970s. Health officials in Guangdong have been immunizing many citizens in the area and are actively embarking on a mosquito eradication campaign, as the disease is spread via mosquito bites.
