“Ugandan Government in Yellow Fever Vaccination Campaign Along Border With Sudan”

BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.bbc.co.uk) (06/27/03)

According to the publication Vision Reporter, the Ugandan government has undertaken a vaccination campaign for the prevention of yellow fever in the border region near Sudan after an outbreak of the disease struck the southern parts of Sudan.  The campaign has been going on for about a month, said Francis Omaswa, director-general of health services for Uganda, using local stocks of yellow fever vaccine.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted that it is locating funds to deliver more of the vaccine to Uganda to help the campaign, with local WHO representative Dr. Oladapo Walker countering claims that the agency is waiting for a Ugandan outbreak of disease to begin delivery of the vaccine.  WHO had noted that the yellow fever vaccine is in short supply, with only 6 million doses available worldwide.
