Leaders of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the AIDS groups of the United Nations and the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, and other institutions have joined in a plea for the creation of a global HIV vaccine development program funded by public organizations. The statement, published Friday in the journal Science, makes the pronouncement that private industry should not be expected to develop such a product on its own. “A well-coordinated global enterprise necessary to drive this scientific effort does not exist and must be created,” the letter reads. The authors include two Nobel laureates and officials from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
