Cel-Sci files for SARS vaccine patent

Jeff Clabaugh

Vienna-based Cel-Sci, whose Multikine therapy is already being studied in AIDS and cancer patients, says it has filed a patent application covering the use of the product for the treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome and West Nile Virus.

The company says the application focuses on the use of the drug in treating elderly patients, where the death rate from both infections is considerably higher. Clinical studies have shown the therapy to have both anti-viral and immune-boosting effects.

"We believe that early administration of Multikine, immediately following diagnosis of SARS, West Nike Virus and other infectious viral diseases, may help boost the body's natural immune response," says Eyal Talor, Cel-Sci senior vice president of research and manufacturing.

In addition to tests in patents infected with HIV, the therapy is also currently in clinical trials for the treatment of head and neck cancer and cervical cancer.
