Ethiopia: AIDS Vaccine Program Workshop Draws
to a Close
Officials from the World Health Organization,
UNAIDS, and a number of African nations ended the second African AIDS Vaccine
Program (AAVP) workshop on June 18, having spent the time considering ways to
increase the number of HIV vaccine trials that occur in Africa. Participants in
the workshop expressed concern that a vaccine to combat the HIV strains
prevalent in Africa is unlikely to be developed because of a lack of scientific
information about the strains and their attributes. As a result, the AAVP is
working to encourage as wide a range of HIV vaccine trials in Africa as
possible.
