ABSTRACT
- Dr Julie L Gerberding, director of Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, says she
is optimistic that monkeypox outbreak in US
can be contained by proper techniques of
isolating humans and by tracing infected
animals; 20 cases confirmed in six states
(S) The director of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention said yesterday that
she was optimistic that the outbreak of
monkeypox could be contained in the United
States by proper techniques of isolating
humans and by tracing infected animals.
The outbreak, the first in the Americas,
is believed to have resulted from a Gambian
giant rat imported from West Africa, where
the disease is endemic. The rat then
infected prairie dogs that were sold or
traded at various pet shops and other sites
in this country.
