Officials at WHO Conference on SARS Say Fight
Isnt Over
Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com)
(06/18/03) P. D3; Wonacott, Peter
The World Health Organization (WHO) has lifted
its travel advisory against Taiwan, and mainland China and Hong Kong have
reported no new severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) infections for the
sixth straight day. The first WHO global conference on SARS has begun in Kuala
Lumpur, but participants warn that the fight is not finished and say that they
must prepare for a new kind of regional threat. Even Malaysia, which had only
five cases of SARS, was affected by disrupted business and tourist travel.
Taiwan, Beijing, Toronto, and Hong Kong are still on the WHOs list of places of
recent SARS local transmission, and Beijing is the only one still on the travel
advisory. Toronto is still struggling with SARS problems, with five new
probable cases over the weekend.
