With 12 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the United States and another 57 suspected cases, Indiana and Wisconsin are both offering smallpox vaccinations to healthcare workers and others exposed to monkeypox patients or animals carrying the virus. It is hoped that vaccination, which is effective up to two weeks after exposure, will help stop the spread of the virus. Health officials in Illinois are still trying to decide whether to offer the smallpox vaccine, which can cause severe side effects.
