China Vaccinates 40,000 Kids After Encephalitis Outbreak
Associated Press (www.ap.org) (06/16/03)
Japanese encephalitis, a viral infection transferred by mosquitoes that causes inflammation of the brain, has infected 20 children and killed one in the southern Chinese province of Meizhou. The outbreak spurred the mass vaccination of 40,000 children in the area against the disease, which has affected mostly children under the age of 10. A health official noted that the outbreak occurred in early June and as many as eight children are still in the hospital as a result of their infections.
