About 10 Percent of Pakistanis Hepatitis
Carriers: Experts
Experts on hepatitis estimated this week that
about 10 percent of Pakistan's 140 million people are carriers of hepatitis B or
C. The experts, speaking at a national meeting on hepatitis in the country,
called for awareness programs that include easy-to-understand language and free
or subsidized treatment programs for hepatitis patients. Dr. Mohammad Umar, a
gastroenterologist, noted that although there is a vaccine against the hepatitis
B virus, uptake with the vaccine is low in Pakistan.
