ST. GEORGE, S.C. (AP) - A man facing charges of homicide by child abuse in
the death of his autistic son won't be allowed out of jail on bail.
Circuit Judge Diane Goodstein did not elaborate on why she denied bail for
Terrence Clay Britt on the homicide charge. But she did speak of concerns about
the deaths of three other children in the Britt family in the past nine years.
Terrence and Renee Britt were indicted in January on charges of homicide by
child abuse, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit homicide by child
abuse and aiding and abetting homicide by child abuse.
Six-year-old Gabriel Britt was reported missing March 3, 2001, and found dead
eight days later in a pond in the rural Texas community, just outside St.
George.
Goodstein did grant Terrence Britt $50,000 bail on charges of obstruction of
justice, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful conduct toward a child.
Britt's wife, Renee, faces similar charges in connection with Gabriel's
death.
The couple have been held since their arrest in January. Their trial is
expected to begin on Aug. 4.
