INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
Ex-Rebel in New War on Diseases
Seattle Post-Intelligencer (www.seattlep-i.com)
(06/09/03) P. B1; Paulson, Tom
Graca Machel, a former rebel and now assistant
overseer of an ambitious immunization project in Mozambique, says that efforts
to vaccinate children there are progressing. Backed by a grant from the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Seattle-based Program for Appropriate
Technology in Health, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI)
program seeks to reach children in the poorest parts of the world with basic
vaccines. Since the program began, immunization rates have risen by 40 percent
in northern Mozambique, reaching about 900,000 children, Machel said.
